How to Measure a Cushion for Replacement
How to Measure a Cushion for Replacement

While it is best to provide the actual cushion or cushion skin to be used as a template to make sure the replacement cushion will be made to the same dimensions, we can manufacture a replacement from a cardboard, kraft paper/butcher paper or fabric template, providing the measurements are also supplied as a double check to ensure accuracy of construction. The loft, or height, of the cushion is also a crucial measurement.
The template must be the exact shape/size of the cushion that you need. When the existing cushion or skin isn’t available, we will make the cushion per the pattern you provide.
We require measurements including width, depth, back height, and cushion thickness for each cushion piece (seat and back). It is common for cushions to have different widths at the front and back (though it may not appear to significantly taper) and the seat cushions may have a different thickness than the back cushions. Keep in mind that cushions break down over time and can stretch out or flatten. If this has occurred, we will require a template of the frame to help ensure your cushions fit your furniture properly.
For step by step instructions watch FiberBuilt Umbrellas’ YouTube videos on How To Measure Seat Cushions. Cushions come in different sizes, shapes and styles, including some with hinged backs, channels, notches and hoods so providing these details is also critical. Photos are highly recommended along with drawings. Include both with your measurements.
Measuring existing cushion guide:
- Place the cushion on a flat surface.
- Using a good measuring tape, measure the width at the front, from end to end. If there is a cut-out for armrests, be sure to measure this separately.
- Measure the width at the back.
- Measure the depth of the chair from front to back.
- Measure the thickness of the cushion. Place a lightweight flat object such as a piece of paper on top of the cushion to the front edge and let the paper slightly extend beyond the edge but keep the paper level. Measure the distance from the flat surface to the edge of the paper.
- If there is a back cushion, repeat the above steps.
- If there are any attachments such as ties, Velcro, etc. be sure to make note of this and measure the length as well as the distance from the edge of the cushion, and provide the location and size of any button(s),
